Yu-Ai Kai Senior Services will host this benefit sake tasting walk through Japantown’s various businesses and restaurants, each having different types of sake at special tables.
This year, Sake San Jose will be premiering a new event in the brand new James Akiyama Wellness Center, the Akiyama Premium Sake Tasting. A special collection of premium sakes will be assembled for tasting in the Center’s Sakura Room (5:30 – 7:30pm).
Along with sake, a variety of “small plates” will be offered to accompany the sakes. Sake experts will be available to offer information about the different sakes being tasted. And once you have tasted these offerings, the streets of Japantown will still be available for you to find your Sake San Jose favorite sakes.
Proceeds from Sake San Jose benefit Yu-Ai Kai Senior Services, a nonprofit senior center, in Japantown.

There is no sign, just a single barrel on the wall.

It took us a few minutes to find this place but when we did, we didn’t want to leave. Its in the basement around the corner from Agenda Lounge @ the intersection of First & San Salvador.
Now, lets get to the good stuff. First off, this is an awesome place for us 30 somes to go & have a normal conversation without your ears bleeding from the loud muic.  The place has a old world feel to it with even the bartenders doing their bit by wearing retro clothes. Cheesy, but it works!  Secondly the bartenders are the best I have ever seen in the bay area. Cache is the head bartender, he calls himself the “mofo professor” compared to the other sophomers working there  They have a really good list of cocktails which they take a lot of care in making. I like the fact that he explained the history behind each of the drinks he made for us. I am more of a single malt guy but I have to say the “old fashioned” I had here was the best!

Have been here a couple times and it’s one of my favorite spots in San Jose but not quite the best. Definitely the best alternative in that section of the city however. Have never really been in the downstairs area but I like the upstairs area. Comfortable chairs , good music , good drinks and perhaps the most diverse crowd in SJ which is a positive.

San Jose Sharks – Pro Hockey

Based in the Bay Area are the San Jose Sharks, a hockey team part of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. This exciting and vivacious sports team was named for the many shark varieties that surround and explore the Pacific waters. This team has won a total of four Division Championships, all within the past decade. The team has consistently performed well in Stanley Cup playoffs, advancing to at least the quarter-finals for the past four years. In addition to being an excellent team, the San Jose Sharks have some excellent players. One of its players is Rob Blake, who represented Canada in the 2002 and 2006 International Winter Olympics. This team currently plays at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, which is affectionately known as the “Shark Tank.” For those who want to watch this agile team in action, The regular season schedule for hockey games runs from October to April, so be sure to keep this in mind if looking to watch these sharks in action

My favorite ride in the whole park is the Dragon’s Den – you and your partner ride down on a double tube and after a downhill slide, you end up in a big bowl, where you go round and round, until it shoots you out the bottom. The kids love Shotgun Falls, the long green slide with the big drop at the bottom. For the kids needing a little less excitement, the Pirate’s Cove is a great place to splash and climb.

Safety is always a major concern at a water park, and I must say, the life guards and staff at the park did an admirable job of keeping things safe and under control. This did lead to long lines, but I felt a lot more comfortable letting my kids go off and enjoy the park without constant supervision. And all kids under 48″ are required to wear life jackets in the wave pool

Tapestry Arts Festival, San Jose, Ca, May 28-29, 2011

San Jose is the capital of Silicon Valley, so it follows that any art festival there would be progressive and original. Art festivals can often be stodgy, dry events that are little more than meager distractions to while a way a day. The Tapestry Arts Festival knows that to get the people to come out for art, some more incentives are needed. The 2009 Tapestry Arts Festival featured, besides more than 300 artists, a rock-climbing wall, a hang gliding simulator, spas, and golf. There was live music from more than a dozen bands. Such variety and entertainment is to be expected of Tapestry as they up the ante every year. The people have responded well; in 2009, there were 150,000 attendees at the festival. Downtown San Jose is easily accessible by public transit and the promoters encourage people to either bike or bus to the event. The free festival is held in September, so the dry, sunny weather easily accommodates such modes of transportation and all the dancing and browsing a heart desires.

The 2011 San José Pride Festival will take place August 20-21, 2011.The San José Pride Board of Directors is excited that President Obama on December 22, 2010, signed into law the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Established in 1993, this law prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in our military. This type of discrimination and injustice in our Armed Forces will no longer be allowed. Current and future Gay and Lesbian soldiers will be able to passionately serve their country and at the same time have the freedom to be open about their sexuality. San José Pride would like to congratulate our gay/lesbian servicemen and servicewomen, who are the true heroes of today and tomorrow.

For many years, LGBTQ organizations and their allies have been building support and fighting for our rights, especially repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Our struggles and calls for repeal did not go unanswered. We must remember to be united and build collaboration with all on our quest for equality. We would like to thank President Obama and those leaders in the US Congress who supported the repeal of DADT.

The San Jose Cinco de Mayo Parade & Festival will take place on the first Sunday in May.
Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in San Jose with a downtown parade since 1983. The celebration commemorates the Battle of Puebla better known as Cinco de Mayo. Thousands of people come to the downtown area to view the floats, colorful costumes, marching bands, drill teams, and assortment of decorated entries vying for first, second, or third place as they march past the judges at the review Grandstand. Celebrate with entertainment, food, booths, arts & crafts, and children’s stage. Parade location: Santa Clara & Market Streets, Downtown San Jose. Festival Location: Discovery Meadow, San Carlos St. and Woz Way, Downtown San Jose.
Cinco de Mayo officially commemorates the anniversary of an early victory by Mexican forces over French forces in the Battle of Pubela on May 5, 1862. It is not the anniversary of the defeat and expulsion of the French forces by the Mexicans, which occurred in 1867. It is also not, as is often assumed, the day of Mexico’s celebrations of independence, which are actually held on September 16. It is believed that the origins of Cinco de Mayo celebrations lie in the responses of Mexicans living in California in the 1860s to French rule in Mexico at that time.
