Go Behind the Scenes at NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley The 75th anniversary open house and walking tours are Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014

Go Behind the Scenes at NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley
News from NASA Ames Research Center:
NASA is inviting the Bay Area behind the gates for its 75th Anniversary. Attendees can take a two-mile walking tour through the Center and visit with Ames engineers and scientists in booths set up in front of their facilities.
After the walking tour, they can join on the plaza to learn about NASA missions.
Food, drinks and NASA gift shop merchandise will be on sale.
    • Event Hours 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Entry gates open 8:15 a.m. Lines may be expected.
    • Ames will have staggered entry times from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to observe their ticket time.
The NASA Ames 75th Anniversary Open House is a unique event, and expected to be many times larger than other recent Ames public events. Ames is working with local law enforcement to address traffic impacts in the area on October 18.
Along with observing the staggered ticket timings, NASA Ames recommends walking, biking and public transportation for the thousands attending. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Moffett Boulevard off-ramps on U.S. Highway 101 will be closed. The South-bound Highway 101 on ramp will remain open. Manila Road will also be closed to vehicles from Enterprise Way to Ellis Street.

On Site Parking is Extremely Limited
NASA Ames has approximately 10,500 on-site parking spaces (accessible through the Ellis Street gate) for an estimated 120,000 attendees – so parking is not guaranteed.
If you have questions regarding ADA accommodations, please contact Dana Bolles at dana.bolles@nasa.gov. Alternative forms of transit are recommended.
NASA will provide shuttle buses every 15 minutes from two public transit locations:
    1. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Light Rail’s “BayShore/NASA” station, and
    2. VTA Light Rail’s “Downtown Mountain View” station and CalTrain “Mountain View” station.
For more information about the VTA’s Light Rail, visit: http://www.vta.org/getting-around/interactive-light-rail-mapFor more information about CalTrain, visit: http://www.caltrain.com/For more information about bike trails in Mountain View, see our Bicycle Map PDFor Getting Around Mountain View webpage
Vehicles may only enter Ames through the Ellis Street gate until parking is filled, but pedestrians, bicyclists and shuttle riders may arrive at either the Moffett Boulevard or Ellis Street gates. Bicycle self-locking areas available at both the Moffett Boulevard and Ellis Street gates.

The James Lick Mansion, Santa Clara, Ca

[James Lick mansion. 554 Mansion Park Drive. Santa Clara, California, USA]

A drive through Santa Clara's Rivermark neighborhood will yield the charming sights of new houses and apartment complexes. Many local residents don't know that tucked away on the grounds of the Mansion Grove Apartments is the historic James Lick Mansion on 4750 Lick Mill Boulevard. James Lick was once the richest man in California.
"James Lick was a very important person," says Victor Fernandez, a maintenance administrator for the Mansion Grove Apartments. "There's a high school named for him called James Lick High School in San Jose. There's also an observatory in a planetarium in Mount Hamilton named for him."
According to the Santa Clara County's online National Register of Historic Places, James Lick was born in 1796 in the state of Pennsylvania. In 1848, Lick arrived in San Francisco, and then later to Santa Clara County. He built his mansion in 1858. His real estate investments during the California gold rush made him rich. He died in 1876 leaving behind a multi-million dollar estate, much of which was donated to charity.
Today the general public can visit the Lick Mansion and its accompanying mill. Read More....

Temporary henna tattoos are among the activities available for kids at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum's annual Epagomenal Festival

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is hosting its annual Egyptian Epagomenal Festival. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the calendar included 360 days plus five additional Epagomenal days. These Epagomenal days were days "out of time" when goddesses Isis and Nephthys, and gods Osiris, Seth, and Horus were born. The Egyptians celebrated their birthdays with a grand festival each year.
This park-wide festival will feature special lectures, programs, tomb tours, a costume contest and Senet tournament (win a family membership), as well as children and family acitivties including a scavenger hunt and ancient Egyptian games.
Outdoor booths will be held during the weekend festival, and include hands-on activities such as children's crafts and even an ancient Egyptian "photo booth". Museum staff will be dressed in Egyptian costumes, and we encourage guests to dress up and join in all of the fun!
