The James Lick Mansion, Santa Clara, Ca

[James Lick mansion. 554 Mansion Park Drive. Santa Clara, California, USA]

A drive through Santa Clara's Rivermark neighborhood will yield the charming sights of new houses and apartment complexes. Many local residents don't know that tucked away on the grounds of the Mansion Grove Apartments is the historic James Lick Mansion on 4750 Lick Mill Boulevard. James Lick was once the richest man in California.
"James Lick was a very important person," says Victor Fernandez, a maintenance administrator for the Mansion Grove Apartments. "There's a high school named for him called James Lick High School in San Jose. There's also an observatory in a planetarium in Mount Hamilton named for him."
According to the Santa Clara County's online National Register of Historic Places, James Lick was born in 1796 in the state of Pennsylvania. In 1848, Lick arrived in San Francisco, and then later to Santa Clara County. He built his mansion in 1858. His real estate investments during the California gold rush made him rich. He died in 1876 leaving behind a multi-million dollar estate, much of which was donated to charity.
Today the general public can visit the Lick Mansion and its accompanying mill. Read More....

Temporary henna tattoos are among the activities available for kids at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum's annual Epagomenal Festival

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is hosting its annual Egyptian Epagomenal Festival. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the calendar included 360 days plus five additional Epagomenal days. These Epagomenal days were days "out of time" when goddesses Isis and Nephthys, and gods Osiris, Seth, and Horus were born. The Egyptians celebrated their birthdays with a grand festival each year.
This park-wide festival will feature special lectures, programs, tomb tours, a costume contest and Senet tournament (win a family membership), as well as children and family acitivties including a scavenger hunt and ancient Egyptian games.
Outdoor booths will be held during the weekend festival, and include hands-on activities such as children's crafts and even an ancient Egyptian "photo booth". Museum staff will be dressed in Egyptian costumes, and we encourage guests to dress up and join in all of the fun!

Los Altos History Museum, Los Altos Ca

Located in one of the few remaining apricot orchards of Santa Clara Valley, the Los Altos History Museum explores the rich history of local people and how the use of the land over time has transformed the agricultural paradise once known as the "Valley of Heart’s Delight" into the high technology hub of today’s Silicon Valley.

Opened in spring of 2001, the Los Altos History Museum resides in an impressive three-level, 8,200-square-foot building – built entirely with private donations; building ownership was transferred to the City of Los Altos in 2002. The Museum features a changing exhibits gallery as well as the permanent exhibit, "Crown of the Peninsula," that describes the rich history of Los Altos. There’s more history just across the lushly landscaped courtyard in the landmark J. Gilbert Smith House. Built in 1905, the home is nestled under majestic heritage oaks and has been meticulously refurbished to replicate a farmhouse of the 1930’s. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the gardens and picnic tables even when the House and Museum are closed.

With the mission to "collect, preserve and interpret the history of the Los Altos area," the Museum provides educational opportunities for children and adults to learn about the community via interactive exhibits and hands-on activities aligned with Museum objectives. Other programs include third and fourth grade tours and curriculum for local school children, oral history collections, the traveling Ohlone kit, and much more.

San Jose Sikh Gurdwara Sahib, San Jose, Ca

    San Jose Sikh Gurdwara Sahib

San Jose, California: In an event highlighting the influence and permanence of the Bay Area’s Indian community, Gov. Jerry Brown and other political leaders joined thousands of colorfully dressed Sikhs who on Sunday celebrated the opening of their greatly expanded temple in the Evergreen hills of San Jose, making it the nation’s largest gurdwara.
The open house marking the $20 million addition to the Sikh Gurdwara-San Jose drew Brown, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and other dignitaries including clergy from Christian and other faiths. They joined thousands of Sikhs who had traveled to the packed celebration from all over Northern California.
For several hours during the afternoon, hundreds of Sikh men and women patiently waited in a long line to bow and pray in the vast, newly completed prayer hall before the Guru Granth Sahib, the religious text of Sikhism. Thousands moved on to the eco-friendly vegetarian kitchen, called a langar, where an army of volunteers had cooked spinach-and-mustard-leaf saag, spicy dahl and sweets — enough to feed a crowd estimated to be around 10,000 people. Museum at Forbes Mill, Los Gatos, Ca

James Alexander Forbes, hoping to strike gold by piggybacking on the California Gold Rush, began building Forbes Mill along the banks of the Los Gatos Creek in 1853. His plan was to capitalize on the gold miners'' demand for bread by operating a flour mill. The mill was the first building and the first business in what eventually became Los Gatos.
He was plagued by financial problems, however, and by the time the mill was producing Santa Rosa Brand flour, eight other mills had sprung up. The competition proved too much for Forbes, and in
1857, the mill and the surrounding 2,000-acre Santa Rosa Ranch--comprising much of the area east of Los Gatos Creek-- were sold off in a bankruptcy auction.
The mill did have a profitable run following its purchase in 1869 when it became the Los Gatos Manufacturing Co. In 1881, an annex was built onto the mill.
Today, the the mill is gone, but the annex is the site of the Forbes Mill Museum, a small, regional history museum operated by the nonprofit Los Gatos Museum Association, which also operates an art and natural history museum in town.
For years, the Museum Association struggled with financial problems. Then, in the summer of 1996, the association board learned that a woman who had lived in Los Gatos as a child had died and left $600,000 to the two small museums.
James Alexander Forbes never did "strike gold" with his mill, but to the longtime volunteers who learned of the windfall during a meeting at the Forbes Mill Museum, it felt quite a bit like striking gold.
The museum promotes the understanding of the regions rich local history including stories from the gold rush, showcase of clothes worn, the legacy of the South Pacific Coast and Southern Pacific Railroads and the interurban trolleys, and the historic James Alexander Forbes Santa Rosa flour mill. Tours are available. There is convenient parking.

Sarah Winchester was heir to the Winchester repeating rifle fortune, and she was convinced that the spirits of all those killed with that gun were haunting her. To confuse the restless spirits, she constructed one of the oddest houses ever built and kept constructing it until the day of her death. The Victorian-style labyrinth that resulted, features a door on the second floor that opens onto thin air—others that open onto walls, and stairs and corridors that lead to dead end.
